Early Years Foundation Stage
“Play is the highest form of research.- Albert Einstein
At West Horndon Primary School, our Early Years curriculum is intentionally designed to give children the strongest possible start. National research highlights that what children learn in their earliest years has a profound and lasting impact on their long‑term development, with high‑quality early education helping to secure the foundational knowledge and skills that lead to later success in learning, wellbeing and personal growth.
Our curriculum reflects these principles. It is carefully sequenced so children build knowledge progressively, ensuring they leave the EYFS with secure foundations in early literacy, numeracy, communication, social development and understanding of the world around them. This structured approach is particularly powerful for children whose early experiences may be limited, helping to close gaps rather than allowing them to widen over time.
Across the year, children explore rich themes—from celebrations, community and seasonal change, to lifecycles, habitats, helping roles and global awareness. Each topic is designed to broaden vocabulary, strengthen understanding and deepen curiosity. Daily opportunities for high‑quality interaction, purposeful play and direct teaching ensure that all children access the full curriculum and develop confidence, independence, resilience and a sense of belonging. Research underscores the value of clear, focused early curricula that emphasise essential content and avoid overloading young learners, which is why every element of our offer is planned with intention and clarity.
Our EYFS provision not only prepares children for Year 1—it lays the strong foundations for their future learning, wellbeing and success. This curriculum is built with expertise, care and the commitment that every child deserves the very best start.
