WHPS School Uniform & Equipment Expectations
At WHPS, we are proud of our school uniform. It helps children feel part of our community and supports our school rules of being READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE.
We appreciate your support in ensuring children come to school dressed appropriately for learning, play and outdoor activities.
Why we have a school uniform
School uniform:
-
helps children feel a sense of belonging and pride
-
promotes equality and a shared identity
-
supports a calm, purposeful learning environment
-
helps children stay safe, especially during PE and outdoor learning
Non-PE Day Uniform (All Pupils)
Children will wear school uniform on Non-PE days (usually 3 days per week).
Required items
-
Red polo shirt (preferably with the school badge)
-
Plain black trousers or knee length skirt (no leggings)
-
Red sweatshirt or cardigan (with school badge)
-
Black or grey socks or tights
-
Black shoes (trainers must not be worn on non-PE days)
Seasonal options
-
Black tailored shorts (summer term)
-
Red/white checked dress (summer term)
-
Red baseball cap (summer months) (no other hats allowed)
Coats (winter months)
During winter, children must have a sensible plain, dark coloured outdoor coat.
PE Days
Children will wear their PE kit to school on PE days (usually 2–3 days per week). This helps us maximise learning time and participation.
In Reception (Year R), children will usually get changed for PE in school. This is because learning to dress and undress independently is an important part of early development, helping children build confidence, independence and self-care skills
PE Kit
-
Plain red t-shirt
-
Plain red hoody (with or without school badge)
-
Plain black tracksuit bottoms
-
Predominantly black trainers (for outside)
Items to be kept in school
-
Plimsolls (for inside)
-
Plain black shorts
-
Drawstring bag (for shorts and plimsolls)
Outdoor Learning & Forest School
Outdoor learning is an important part of life at WHPS. Children will take part in outdoor learning and Forest School sessions in all seasons, so it is important that they are dressed appropriately to stay comfortable and safe.
Children must have in school:
-
welly boots
-
waterproof coat
-
waterproof trousers (preferably black or red)
Having the right outdoor clothing means children can fully participate in every session — whatever the weather.
Swimming Kit (Year 6)
Year 6 children will need the following for swimming:
-
Plain black sports swimming costume/trunks (not loose shorts)
-
Red swimming hat (boys and girls)
Jewellery
For safety reasons, jewellery must not be worn to school.
The only exceptions are:
-
one or a pair of small plain gold or silver stud earrings (no bigger than ½ cm)
-
an analogue wristwatch (no smart or digital devices are permitted)
Important PE safety rule
Earrings must be removed by the child for PE, or not worn to school on PE days. Staff are not able to remove earrings for children.
Hair, Nails and Make-Up
To help children stay safe and presentable in school:
Hair
-
Hair below chin length must be tied back or up (regardless of gender)
-
No extreme/fashion haircuts (including shaved, tramlines or designs)
-
All long hair must be tied back during PE lessons
Nails
-
No decorated or manicured nails allowed
-
Only clear plain nail varnish permitted
-
Long nails are not permitted
Make-up
-
No make-up is allowed in school
Equipment (Bags and Personal Items)
To keep children organised and safe:
-
All children need a dedicated book bag for reading materials
(WHPS will provide one free of charge in September)
-
No unnecessary bags should be brought into school, including:
-
backpacks
-
tote bags
-
handbags
-
Mobile phones
Mobile phones must not be brought onto or used on the school premises by children.
Labelling Uniform
We strongly recommend that all items of clothing, shoes and equipment are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
This includes:
-
jumpers and cardigans
-
coats
-
PE kit
-
plimsolls and trainers
-
hats, gloves and scarves
-
welly boots and waterproofs
Labelling makes a huge difference — it helps children become more independent and allows staff to return items quickly.
Lost Property
We do our best to reunite children with missing items, but we receive a large amount of lost property each term.
To help reduce lost property:
-
please ensure everything is labelled
-
encourage children to check they have all belongings at the end of each day
-
check lost property regularly if your child is missing something
Please note: unclaimed items will be kept for a set period of time and may then be recycled or donated, particularly unnamed items.
