Essential Spelling & Word Knowledge | KS2 programme | OUP

At WHPS we use ELS Spelling to support the teaching and learning of spelling.

As children reach the end of their phonics programme at West Horndon Primary School, it’s important that they move to a structured and systematic spelling programme. To manage this crossover from phonics we are following the ELS Essential Spelling scheme in Year 2 and then Essential Spelling and Word Knowledge into KS2 .

ELS Essential Spelling is a whole-class spelling programme taught as three sessions each week. The scheme covers all the statutory statements in the National Curriculum.

Essential Spelling and Word Knowledge is a spelling programme that helps pupils understand patterns in the English language. It teaches spelling through a combination of:

  • Morphology (how word parts like prefixes/suffixes work)

  • Etymology (word origins)

  • Phonological rules (sound–spelling rules)

It focuses on helping children learn the meaning and function of word parts and how these combine to create meaning, giving pupils the knowledge and repeated opportunities to practise and apply spelling patterns for confident, accurate spelling.
