Sport at WHPS

“Enjoyment is the key. If children enjoy sport, they are far more likely to stay involved.”
Trevor Brooking

This belief underpins our approach to extra-curricular sport, where enjoyment, inclusion and opportunity for all are central to everything we do.

We place great value on extra-curricular sport and are committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for every child to take part, participate and succeed. We believe sport plays a vital role in developing confidence, resilience, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging.

We are proud to work in partnership with Shenfield Sports Partnership, Brentwood District Sports Association and Panathlon, whose inclusive events ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability or experience, have the opportunity to represent their school with pride.

Through competition and participation, we teach our children that sport is about more than winning. We encourage them to win with grace, lose with dignity, support one another, and show respect for teammates, opponents and officials alike. Above all, we want every child to experience the joy, achievement and pride that comes from representing their school and being part of a team.

“Sport gives young people confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging — and every child deserves that opportunity.”
Tanni Grey-Thompson

The Shenfield School Sports Partnership

We are proud to be part of the Shenfield Sports Partnership, which supports schools in delivering high-quality physical education, school sport and competitive opportunities.

Through our involvement in the partnership, our pupils take part in a wide range of inclusive inter-school events and festivals, ensuring that as many children as possible have the opportunity to represent their school. These events provide meaningful sporting experiences that value participation, teamwork and personal development, alongside competition delivered to a high standard.

As part of the partnership programme, our pupils participate in activities such as dodgeball, football, girls’ football, boccia, new age kurling and sitting volleyball, helping to ensure that sport is accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for all.

“Taking part matters. Sport is about finding what you can do, not focusing on what you can’t.”
Kelly Holmes

Panathlon

Panathlon Challenge | Panathlon Foundation Ltd. Registered Charity: 1072638

We are proud to work with Panathlon, which provides high-quality, inclusive sporting opportunities for young people of all abilities.

Panathlon events are particularly beneficial for pupils in our resourced provision and for other children with additional needs, offering them the chance to participate in structured, supportive competitions where confidence, enjoyment and personal achievement are celebrated. These events ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to represent their school with pride in an inclusive and positive environment.

Activities such as ten-pin bowling provide opportunities for success, and our pupils often experience a strong sense of achievement through their participation. These experiences help to build self-esteem, resilience and a belief in their own abilities, reinforcing the message that sport is for everyone.
